Important Notes

Visiting Spiti Valley is an adventure of a lifetime, offering an unparalleled experience of high-altitude landscapes, unique cultural heritage, and serene monastic life. However, the remote and rugged nature of the valley requires travelers to take certain precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Here are some key precautionary measures to keep in mind before embarking on your trip to Spiti Valley

1. Acclimatization to High Altitude

  • Gradual Ascent: Allow your body to adjust to the high altitude gradually to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Spend a couple of days at a moderately high altitude before reaching Spiti. We recommend you to reach Spiti via Kinnaur side, as it helps in acclimatization much better than the Manali side.
  • Recognize AMS Symptoms: Be aware of AMS symptoms, including headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If symptoms persist or worsen, descend to a lower altitude immediately.

2. Health and Fitness

  • Physical Fitness: Ensure you are in good physical condition as traveling in Spiti involves long drives on rough roads and possible trekking or hiking. If you don’t exercise regularly, taking a long walks, deep breathing exercises is a good start atleast a month before your visit to the valley.
  • Medical Check-Up: Consult with a healthcare provider regarding travel to high-altitude areas, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions like heart disease, high BP etc. Your doctor may alter your dosage basis your current condition.

3. Travel Insurance

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Opt for travel insurance that covers high-altitude sickness, emergency evacuation, and any medical emergencies due to the remote nature of Spiti.

4. Pack Appropriately

  • Warm Clothing: Key is to layer up. Even in summer, temperatures can drop significantly, especially at night. Pack warm layers, including thermal wear, woolen socks, gloves, and a hat.
  • Sun Protection: The high altitude means stronger UV rays. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Medications: Carry a first-aid kit along with personal medications and high-altitude sickness preventive medicines as advised by your doctor.

5. Vehicle Preparation

  • Check Your Vehicle: If you’re driving, ensure your vehicle is well-maintained and suitable for high-altitude, off-road conditions. Carry spare tires, and engine oil.
  • Experienced Driver: If you’re not familiar with mountain driving, consider hiring a local driver who knows the terrain.

6. Connectivity and Cash

  • Limited Connectivity: Mobile and internet connectivity is scarce in Spiti. Inform someone about your travel plans and regularly update them when possible. Until recently, the only network we depended on was BSNL; but with the fast growing network coverage of Jio, we recommend you to carry a Jio sim. Pre-paid works in the valley.
  • Carry Cash: ATMs are few and far between, and while most places now accept digital payments, still carry sufficient cash for your expenses/ emergencies.

7. Respect Local Culture and Environment

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Dress modestly and ask for permission before photographing people or religious sites.
  • Environmental Consciousness: Carry back non-biodegradable waste and avoid using single-use plastics to preserve the pristine environment of Spiti. We urge you to carry biodegradable bin bags.

8. Travel Permits

Foreign nationals, coming from Kinnaur side, need an Inner Line Permit to visit Spiti. Check the latest requirements and apply in advance.

9. Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Spiti is from May to October when the roads are clear of snow from both sides. The valley is inaccessible by road from Manali side, starting late October till April due to heavy snowfall.
